Tips for Maintaining Above-ground Pools
Above-ground or modular pools are a great option over in-ground models because they're affordable, don't take long to set up, can fit into smaller spaces, and they're mobile. Another benefit of owning an above-ground pool is how easy maintenance is if done correctly. Plus, you don't have to worry about digging a big hole in your backyard.
However, there are certain things to keep in mind in order for your pool to stay in good working condition and crystal clear, especially when you are hosting a weekend pool party!
Test the Chlorine Level
Chlorine kills harmful algae, bacteria, and microorganisms. However, it can be affected by sun exposure and chemicals found in sunscreen, sweat, and more. Check your manufacturer's instructions, but most would advise testing your chlorine level about every other day with chlorine test strips. A pool should have a chlorine level between 2-4 ppm.
Shock Treat Your Pool
It is recommended that you give your pool a weekly shock treatment with a powdered form of chlorine. This will oxidise any contaminants, releasing chlorine and letting it do its work to clean up your water.
Check pH Level
Ensure your pool's pH level stays within the range of 7.2-7.6 to maintain the effectiveness of the chemicals you use to keep it clean.
Run the Pool Pump
Circulating water reduces algae formation. It also helps to direct any garden debris toward the filter. Experts suggest running your pool for at least eight hours a day.
Cleaning Filters
Filters serve to capture any debris drifting in the pool so it's essential to clear this about once a day to ensure the effectiveness of the filter. Also replace the filter upon the manufacturer's suggested time span and recommendations.
Use a Pool Vacuum
The best filter and regular chlorine treatments all mean nothing without a good vacuum at least once a week, even if you aren't using the pool. This keeps the water clear, keeps algae at bay, and enhances the effectiveness of the chlorine. Try using a vacuum specifically for above-ground pools. This will avoid a costly cleanup down the line.
Invest in a Solar Blanket
A solar blanket provides numerous functions. It keeps debris and dirty water from rainfall from creeping into your pool. It also helps reduce evaporations and heats your pool via solar energy. Leave the blanket on the pool whenever it is not in use.
Winterise Your Pool Correctly
If you're not planning to use your above-ground swimming pool over the next few months, there are some things you should do before you turn off the power and close it up.
- Clean the pool thoroughly
- Balance the chemical levels
- Use special winterisation products for the pools
- Clean and pack away the filters, pumps, and accessories
- Remove the skimmers
- Cover the pool
